Microsoft licenses out exFat access, which they control the rights for. When you buy a laptop, that license is built into the cost of the operating system. Rather than include the cost of the license for something many users do not end up using, Synology leaves it up to the user whether they license that from Microsoft or not.

  1. ExFAT is a file system that was created to be used on flash drives like USB memory sticks and SD cards. The name of exFAT is an acronym for Extended File Allocation Table, which gives a hint for its precursors: FAT32 and FAT16. ExFAT is a newer version of the old FAT32 file system, and it is a middle ground between FAT32 and the more modern.
  2. Install the exFAT license. Go to DSM Package Center All Packages. Find exFAT Access and click Buy. Sign in to your Synology Account and follow the system prompts to complete the purchase. Go to Synology Account Profile Payment Purchase History to check if payment is successful and to find the product receipt.

Description:

Microsoft exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table) technology is a file system optimized for flash storage devices. With exFAT installed, you can access external storage devices with a file system formatted as exFAT on your NAS. Unlike FAT32, exFAT supports a single file larger than 4 GB and can be used on both Windows and Mac operating systems. In response to Microsoft's announcement to integrate exFAT into the Linux kernel in 2019, Synology users can install exFAT free of charge by updating DSM to version 7.0 or above.

Note: For now, other NAS vendors continue to charge users for the exFAT package. At the moment Synology is the only one offering the exFAT package for free to its DSM 7 users, once again a step ahead of its competitors!
